Recipe Highlights

  • Quick & Easy — These umami seasoned sweet potatoes are so easy to make at home. They take just a few minutes of active work to come together.
  • Great for Sweetgreen Copycat Recipes — If you want to make a Sweetgreen Harvest Bowl, a Sweetgreen Caramelized Steak Salad or a Sweetgreen Hot Honey Chicken Salad, you need this sweet potato recipe!
  • Tasty Side Dish — These sweet potatoes are also delicious on their own as a healthy side dish.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make the Sweetgreen sweet potatoes.
  • Sweet Potatoes: Of course you’ll need sweet potatoes as the main ingredient. However, you can use this umami seasoning on any type of roasted vegetable, including broccoli, cauliflower and carrots.
  • Olive Oil: Use extra virgin olive oil, or you can use avocado oil, sunflower oil or vegetable oil as a substitute.
  • Salt: The main ingredient in the seasoning is salt. For a lower sodium seasoning, you can reduce the salt by up to half.
  • Onion & Garlic Powder: You’ll need both onion and garlic powder for the seasoning. Make sure you are using just garlic powder (and not garlic salt), since the seasoning already has a lot of salt in it.
  • Chili Powder: A little bit of chili powder gives the seasoning a tiny bit of spicy flavor, but it is very subtle and not overly powerful.
  • Nutritional Yeast: Depending on your grocery store, you should be able to find nutritional yeast in either the baking aisle or the condiment & spice aisle. If your grocery store doesn’t carry it, you can easy order some online.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Mix the salt, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder and nutritional yeast together until evenly combined.

The umami seasoning ingredients mixed together in a small glass bowl.

Step 2: Drizzle the olive oil over the sweet potatoes and use your hands to evenly coat the potato chunks. Sprinkle a generous pinch of the umami seasoning over the potato chunks and massage the sweet potatoes to evenly distribute the seasoning.

Step 3: Roast the sweet potatoes on a lightly greased baking sheet for 25 to 30 minutes at 425F. The potatoes should be tender when pierced with a fork.

Expert Tips

  • There will be extra seasoning. This recipe makes more seasoning than you will need for 3 sweet potatoes. Use your judgement when adding the seasoning over your potatoes. The sweet potato chunks should be lightly covered with the umami seasoning without being coated in it.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge. These sweet potatoes taste best when eaten fresh, however you can store leftovers in the fridge. If you want to reheat them before serving, you can pop them in the air fryer for a couple minutes.
  • Add in some other veggies. This seasoning is delicious on all sorts of roasted veggies. Try it with broccoli, cauliflower or carrots for example.
