A spoonful of garlic breadcrumbs.

Similar to these Za’atar flavored bread crumbs, these garlic bread crumbs are seasoned and then baked in the oven until golden and crispy.

These garlic breadcrumbs are used for making Sweetgreen copycat salad recipes such as a Steak Honey Crunch Salad or a Hummus Crunch Salad, but they can really be added into any type of salad recipe.

Recipe Highlights

  • Crunchy & Flavorful — These garlic breadcrumbs are packed with just the right amount of garlic flavor and add a delicious crunch to any type of salad or bowl recipe.
  • Sweetgreen Copycat — Sweetgreen uses these garlic breadcrumbs in a few of their salad recipes such as their Steak Honey Crunch salad. So if you are looking to make Sweetgreen copycat salad recipes at home, you’ll need this recipe.
  • Easy big batch — These breadcrumbs last a while, so you can make a big batch of this recipe and keep them on hand for adding to any of your salad recipes.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make garlic breadcrumbs.
  • Garlic Powder: Garlic powder gives these breadcrumbs their garlic flavor. You can use garlic salt as a substitute, however, it will make these breadcrumbs quite salty, so you will want to use them more sparingly in your salads.
  • Bread: You can use any type of bread you like for this recipe. It is best if the bread is 1 or 2 days old at least so it has started to get a bit hard. However, if you only have fresh bread, you can toast it before hand so it becomes a bit stiffer.
  • Olive Oil: You’ll need a small drizzle of olive oil to coat the bread crumbs with. You can replace this with another type of oil, such as avocado oil, sunflower oil or vegetable oil.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Pulse the bread in a food processor until it breaks down into a crumb-like consistency. Don’t over blend the bread, otherwise it will become too fine.

Step 2: In a large bowl, sprinkle the olive oil and garlic powder over the breadcrumbs. Toss the crumbs to evenly coat them with the seasoning.

Step 3: Line the breadcrumbs evenly on a baking sheet and bake at 350F for 5 to 10 minutes, until they are golden brown.

Expert Tips

  • Add garlic breadcrumbs right before serving. Regardless of your salad recipe, add these garlic breadcrumbs to your salad right before serving. Otherwise, they will get soggy. You can still meal prep your salads, but use salad tupperware containers so you can keep the salad ingredients separate.
  • Don’t over blend the breadcrumbs. When food processing the breadcrumbs, only pulse them a few times to turn them into crumbs. Don’t blend them too much or they will become a powder.
  • Watch the breadcrumbs closely when baking. These breadcrumbs can burn quickly. Watch them closely when you put them in the oven and take them out as soon as they turn golden brown.
  • Store breadcrumbs in the fridge. Store the garlic breadcrumbs in an air tight container in the fridge for up to a week.
