Ingredients & Substitutions

The ingredients needed to make Sweetgreen’s Caramelized Steak Plate.
  • Steak: Make your Sweetgreen caramelized garlic steak in advance. You can cook your steak using whichever method you prefer and cook to your desired doneness. If you don’t like steak, you can make this cast-iron skillet chicken instead.
  • Broccoli & Sweet Potatoes: Both of these vegetables are roasted using Sweetgreen’s umami seasoning. You can follow this recipe for Sweetgreen’s spicy broccoli and this recipe for Sweetgreen’s roasted sweet potatoes. However, you can also just roast these vegetables in the oven using a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper if you prefer.
  • Cherry Tomatoes: Cut your cherry or grape tomatoes in half.
  • Wild Rice: Sweetgreen’s wild rice is used as the base for this salad recipe. You can replace the salad base with quinoa, brown rice or couscous. You could also use a kale or another leafy green as a base for a lower carb salad.
  • Pesto Vinaigrette: This steak salad is topped with Sweetgreen’s pesto vinaigrette that is made with olive oil, fresh basil, umami seasoning and apple cider vinegar. As a substitute, you can use Sweetgreen’s balsamic vinaigrette dressing, or a classic red wine vinaigrette.

Expert Tips

  • Prep the ingredients in advance. If you enjoy salad recipes, and especially Sweetgreen ones, prep the ingredients in advance and then meal-prep a variety of salad recipes for the week. For example, you can use extra sweet potatoes and wild rice to make a Harvest Bowl or extra pesto vinaigrette to make a Hummus Crunch Salad.
  • Meal-prep using salad tupperware containers. I like to use these salad tupperware containers to keep the ingredients separate until I am ready to eat the salad. I have found that these containers are the perfect size for lunch, they are compact and leak-proof.
  • Customize the recipe. This steak salad recipe is completely customizable and pretty forgiving. Adjust the recipe based on ingredients that you have in your fridge and what is in season at the time.

This post about the best steak to use in salad goes into the best cuts to use for steak. It also includes a recipe for cooking your own steak using a cast iron skillet.

Do I have to make the steak from scratch?

No. If you want to save time, you can use pre-packaged cooked steak bites instead. If you can’t find them in your grocery store, you can use pre-packaged roasted chicken bites, which are more readily available.
